…the puppy is afraid of the dark.

This is a thumbnail sketch from Otis and the Puppy (Philomel,3/12/13). A sketch like this comes in the early planning stage of a book. It’s a stage when you don’t yet know the book very well and everything can go wrong. You’re simply choosing moments of the text to try to tell the story effectively.
I’m always looking for mood and emotion.

I’ll often scratch notes along the drawing to the art director and editor as I share the sketches.
Sometimes a single sketch can give you confidence to carry on. This one did that for me.
